Here are some things that make recruiters sigh in frustration and reach for the next resume.

1. A Photo:

Please, DO NOT put a photo on your resume (unless you are in the entertainment industry, i.e., modeling or acting). Many companies use sorting software, which can skew your chances of your resume being seen. An image can also be distracting, taking up the 7 seconds the average talent recruiter spends on each resume. Don’t waste those precious seconds on your appearance. Focus instead on your hard-earned skills and professional experience.


2. Outdated Technology Skills:

In the fast-paced healthcare industry, technology evolves rapidly. Including outdated or obsolete software and tools on your resume can make you appear disconnected from current practices. Instead, highlight your proficiency in modern systems and applications relevant to the role you're applying for.


3. Inflated Buzzwords:

We've all seen resumes filled with buzzwords like "proactive," "detail-oriented," and "results-driven." But simply listing these words without substantial evidence is counterproductive. Show, don't tell! Provide concrete examples of how you've demonstrated these traits in your previous roles.


4. Lengthy Job Descriptions:

Recruiters have limited time to review each resume, so lengthy job descriptions can be overwhelming. Keep it concise and impactful. Focus on relevant responsibilities and achievements, ensuring your resume remains engaging and easy to skim.


5. Irrelevant Hobbies:

While having hobbies and interests outside of work is excellent, including unrelated ones on your resume is unnecessary. Recruiters are more interested in your professional qualifications than your love for underwater basket weaving. Stick to relevant information to maintain focus.

2. Continuing Education:

In the ever-evolving healthcare field, professional growth is paramount. Yet, some candidates forget to include relevant certifications, workshops, or courses they've completed. Remember, showcasing your commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest industry trends is a surefire way to impress recruiters.


3. Soft Skills:

The resume isn't just a checklist of hard skills. While technical proficiency is crucial, it's equally important to emphasize your interpersonal skills, such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities. These soft skills are invaluable in the healthcare industry, where human connection plays a pivotal role.


4. Volunteer Work:

Seeing that many candidates forget to highlight their volunteer experiences is disheartening. Volunteering showcases a selfless attitude and demonstrates valuable transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, and adaptability.
